The United Galaxies Army (UGA) is the third largest branch of the Armed Forces of the UGC. The Army is mainly focused on large-scale/long-term ground operations, generally in defensive roles, though a critical element is long-term offensive operations.
The UGC traces its linages back to the Armies Of The United Nations (The United Earth Government Army of the Global Civil War Era), the Carbannaran G'Hendand'arae, the Tiresian Mercantile Republic (the Robotech Masters) remnant forces, and the various armies of the Sentinel Alliance. To this has been added the armies of the various empires that the UGC has annexed. The "declared" birthday of the UGA is listed as 2005, but informally traces back to 1660 when the British Army was founded. (Consideration of "informal founding" under the Tiresian Empire are generally dismissed, as the Tiresian Empire had ceased to exist at the time of Tirol's annexation, and no hardware of that organization remains in service.)
The UGA is headed by the Chief of Staff of the Army who reports to the Chief Of Galactic Security and serves at the pleasure of the Chairman, United Galaxies Council. Currently manpower of the UGA is 60 million men strong, with about three times this in the Defense Forces.
Structure.
The Army is made up of three components: The Regular Active Duty Component, or the "Regular Army;" of about 20 million; And two reserve components, the Army Reserve of about 40 million men, and the Defense Forces of about 180 million. Regional forces, called the Home or National Guard on Terra, can number significantly more. The reserve components are composed of part-time soldiers who train three days a month and for two weeks (continuous) once a year. Any or all of the Defense Forces can federalized by order of the Chairman and against the regional government's wishes; The National Guards can only be federalized with the local government's approval, but 'usually' requests of this type are approved.
The Army is led by the Chief Of Staff, who has the statutory authority to conduct all the affairs of the army; S/He reports to the Chief Of Galactic Security. The Chief of Staff (the highest-ranked officer who wears the uniform of the Army) also sits on the Joint Chiefs Of Staff (JCS), which also has a member of other four branches.
The Army is divided into Corps, each built of a variable number of Divisions; Each division is made of 10 Battalions of 10 Company of 5 Platoons of 5 Squads of 5 men each; A variation of the Division is the Brigade, where Armor, Infantry, Cavalry, Dragoon, and Artillery are fully integrated into one unit, rather than several Infantry battalions, 2-3 Armored battalions, and an Artillery Company embedded in Command Battalion.
Equipment.
Weapons.
Individual Weapons.
The army employs various individual weapons to provide light firepower at short ranges. The most common weapon used by the army is the Gallant H-90, though other weapons are available as well.
Crew Served Weapons.
The army employs various crew-served weapons to provide heavy firepower at ranges exceeding that of individual weapons; These including the M-2, PB-22a Shoulder Particle Beam Cannon, and M-550d Heavy Particle Beam Cannon. There are no current plans to develop a medium infantry support weapon.
For fire support, the Army generally depends upon rail launchers, though there are plans to develop a lighter mortar-type weapons.
Vehicles.
Ground Vehicles.
The army's most common vehicle is the M-610 Gareth Supply Vehicle, which is capable of serving in any role not requiring armor; Next in line is the M-611 Perceval Armored Logistics Vehicle, as it is armored, but also more expensive.
After that, in order of general numbers, are M-406 Turaladri'e AIFV, M-221 Grant Main Battle Tank, M-18 Armadillo Anti-Aircraft Vehicle, E-664 Badger Engineering Vehicle, and M-602 Anarissa Self-Propelled Artillery/Tank Killer. The M-553 Lancelot Reconnaissance Tank and M-558 Galahad Command Tank are actually going out of service; There is consideration to develop a Brigade Fighting Vehicle, similar to La Légion's L-500 Alsatian VPCI.
Army Aviation.
The Army mainly operates helicopters, but also a few fixed-wing aircraft.
The Army uses thousands of Sky Master, HH-60 Blackhawk, and Comancherro helicopters.
The majority of the Army's fixed-wing fleet is the Hunter Aero-Tech FJ-21 and 22 Fan Jet and, CivCraft-1 & -2, which are used for executive transport and artillery spotting. Ground-based artillery spotters are generally inserted by XA-11 Skyhawk Attacker, while massed infantry can be inserted by Low Altitude Assault Transport and more so GS-8 Neopolis; In fact, all Army infantry inserted by GS-8's are under Army ownership (as most GS-8's ferrying Marine infantry are owned by the Marine). Almost all forward bases have XTNDER II Observation Pods; In fact, the XTNDER was developed for the Army, even though they ended up with the other branches as well.
Dress Uniform.
Uniforms.
All five branches have the same uniform in all regards except in color.
Dress Uniform.
The Earth Robotech Expeditionary Forces (the 'original' REF) had a very complicated uniform that drew upon the T'sentraedi and Terran uniforms. However, they design was complicated, and to simplify supply was changed (officially) in 2192 to an older design.
Combat Uniform.
There is no "one" combat uniform scheme, since there are too many types of environments for one scheme to even generally work; White and green stand out in the desert, white and brown in a forest, brown and green in a tundra, and none of the three even generally help in an urban environment.
As such, wide discretion is given to the scheme to mission commanders, who rarely have as many options as they would like.
