 Overview.
 Darkplace Hospital is a cursed British hospital in Romford, London. During construction it's said the construction workers accidently opened a gate to Hell, to which Lucifer directed the process of sealing the gate once again in disgust by laying down a steel

grate over the hole, covering it with cardboard, and covering that with multiple layers of concrete. As the story continues he then threatened if anyone re-opened the gate he'd personally arrest them and haul them before a constable; When asked why he wouldn't drag them to Hell he reportedly said he didn't want this sort of riff raff in his house.
 The fact that the hospital was built over a dismal peat moor didn't help the hospital's reputation. In fact that made everything worse. The hospital had a permanent low thick fog over it; No matter what the surrounding weather was like, the moor was as foggy as soup.
 The hospital had a continuous run of bad luck, from basic issues like ghosts and demons to a zombie outbreak after about 2 years and a gorilla invasion and while brief
 Garth MARENGHI, a paranormal investigator, and his publisher Dean LEARNER conducted a 5 year invstigation into the hospital's strange events, and while they never discoverered anything absolutely conclusive they did apparently find enough to produce a miniseries based on their discoveries entitled Garth Marenghi's Darkplace. However, production was suddenly shut down by pressure applied to their various creditors. MARENGHI would claim the MI-8 (British mility intelligence) applied this pressure, butu there was never any evidence proffered.
 Location.
 The moors of Romford, London. In 1839 a train station was built connecting Romford to London leading to significant development of the town, shifting it from agriculture to light industry and then to retail and commerce. The original site is still known as Oldchurch, which was moved northwards in medieval times to avoid the frequent flooding of the River Rom. The hospital was built closer to the Oldchurch area due to available space; However, now the area is a moor, and slightly boggy, which may account for the persistent fog.
 Plankholders.
  • Dr Rick "Dag" DAGLESS, M.D.: 'Dag' was a Viet Nam and Falklands War veteran and self describe former warlock. He keeps a Magnum revolver on him at all times. It was known he was married but not much seems to remain of her from the records other than her name was Lydia.
  • Thornton REED, hospital administrator. Mr REED carried a shotgun and answered to a boss called "WON Ton." However, it was testified to several times that no one ever met this Mr WON, and many speculated that he didn't exist. Mr. REED was in the Korean War, in which he lost a testicle (and a knee) and became a POW.
  • Dr Lucien SANCHEZ, MD. Often described as "improbably handsome with impossibly coiffured hair and a voice an octave lower than it should be." Dr SANCHEZ was a Viet Nam veteran, and carried a semi-automatic pistol (with a backup in a leg holster in case his original turned on him).
  • Dr Liz ASHER, MD. A striking blonde with occasional psychic powers (sometimes exacerbated by heightened emotion). ASHER graduated from Harvard College Yale, excelling in academics with straight A's.
  • Madeleine WOOL, an accountant by trade, was hired to maintain the hospital's finances. She was therefore closely tied to Thornton REED. It's claimed by some they had a sexual affair at one point, but this was never confirmed nor denied by either. WOOL was the first interviewed about the mysterious Mr. WON, saying she'd never had a reason to speak to him.
  • Jim NOBLE, a hospital worker. It was said nobody knew exactly what he did, but whenever the was a non-medical problem somehow everyone knew to call Jim.
  • Stuart EXTRA, keyboard soloist and barman;
  • Padre JULIAN, the hospital's vicar;
  • Graham Linehan porter;
  • Stephen MERCHANT dietician;
  • An alien of simian evolutionary ancestor that went by the name Noel.
     The Curse.
     Madeleine WOOL, a member of the governance board, disappeared at around the time MARENGHI and LEARNER'S production was terminated; In an interview later in life REED implied that he was aware of the circumstances of her disappearance and claimed "she is probably dead and buried in East Germany. If she got a burial."
     Significant Later Staff.
  • Garth MARENGHI, a self described "author, dream weaver, visionary, plus actor. His accent was pitched somewhere between Kent and boring. The disappearance of WOOL led to interest in the hospital.
  • Dean LEARNER, Garth's publisher. Dean would claim that it was his idea to follow up on the WOOL disappearance, a claim MARENGHI'S successors would deny, leading to a multi generational series of lawsuits and angry recriminations in the press.
     Strategic Alliance.
     The first attempt was to hire The Ghostbusters. While a team did come down, they declared that "whatever you have is way beyond out abilities. I'm sorry. We will not however be billing you any further."
     The hospital then attempted to recruit The Scooby Gang; Again, a team came down, but they also determind the hospitals were beyond their abilities. They also asked not to be contacted by the hospital, it's staff, former staff, vendors, contractors, patients, creditors, neighbors, interested well wishees, or literally anyone ever associated with the hospital in any way shape or form. Ever.
     Galactic Paranormal Investigations, Inc. was hired next; The HALLIWELLS did test the gate to Hell and determined that is was still sealed ("Whatever's on the other side of that seal does NOT want you to open it, what in the Hell did you do? Piss on it's mother?") but beyond that could offer no assistance.
     Students from Unseen University also took a turn at the hospital; The were able to make some progress against some of the more powerful presences, but were not able to fully contain the trouble. Still, scalpels stopped flying through the air before being used in surgery, so the doctors considered it a minor success.
     Garth Marenghi's Darkplace.
     Around 2500 would-be auteur Garth MARENGHI and his publicist and publisher Dean LEARNER made the 2 hour long docudrama Garth Marenghi's Darkplace. Nobody ever saw it because the network buried the film 'at MI-8's direction, or at least their harassment.' Several years later MARENGHI found several sets of recordings and attempted independently to re-produce the film with LEARNER'S help. In the course of doing so the men returned to Darkplace Hospital and interviewed some of the staff in a series entitled Man To Man; During his interview, Thorton REED implied that he knew the circumstances of Madeliene WOOD'S disappearance, and claimed that it was her that was responsible for the original film being shut down, though he was unable to elaborate on how. In fact he confessed he only knew he was responsible, just not how she'd done it. But that she knew it had something to do with the mysterious Mr. WON, who'd since died. But that she had nothing to do with his death.
