Fantome's species is a humanoid race believed to be native to the Voids. They were encountered in 2377 living covertly on the ships that were trapped inside of a Void but have since been found in several. They are extremely shy of other species but with a little coaxing seemed to do fine in interacting with other species as soon as they were sure they wouldn't be harmed. They do not posses any verbal skills and are physically unable to speak due to the lack of vocal chords or similar organ, and instead communicate with each other using a combination of telepathic and hand and body gestures. The barrier was breached when a Fantome was shown how to communicate using musical notes on a PDA who then showed others. They are an extremely intelligent species, capable of learning very fast and adapting to benefit the most from any circumstances they found themselves in. They also possess a unique and extremely complex physiology. They possessed a very large lung capacity, which allowed them to survive in an atmosphere devoid of oxygen for a certain period of time and have several orifices on their faces and hands which hold sensory organs. They also have the physiological ability to refract their life signs, preventing them from being easily detected by sensors. The Fantome have a voracious appetite to build up reserves whenever they found food. Despite being physically incapable of making sounds, they have a sense of hearing, and appear to enjoy music. Newcomers to a Void describe them as parasites, as they have the habit of hijacking transports and stealing food. The Federate and UGC's experience with the Fantome is very diffrent, having learned to work with the species in mutually advantageous partnerships. The only stable homes of the Fantome are the Soong Institute and The Yard, both of which treat the Fantome as the native species. The Fantome at these sites are hired as workers ranging from unskilled to highly skilled, based on training, and have the local populace select a leader to speak for them collectively. this leader is then tasked with representing their members and arranging basic necessities, but due to the populations involved they have learned to designate subordinates to address a given issue (housing, food, medical care, education, etc.). Very rarely a Fantome will travel beyond their Void, always on collective business and under order from their leader. they do not like travelling beyond the Voids for reasons of their own which no one understands (those few who have tried accept rather quickly to not press the issue any further). Religion The Fantome have a faith, but not a formal religion. Each Fantome treats the existence of a higher power individually. No one tries to mess with this, since they do not want anything to do with organized religion. Some basic tenets- 1. Honor the higher power. 2. Honor your family and clan. 3. You may not murder. 4. You may not take more than your needs. 5. You may not lie about others. 6. You may not take your neighbor's property. 7. You may not horde more than your needs. Social Order The social order of the Fantome was the individual's children, themselves, their parents, sibling, and nieces and nephews, their larger family, and their clan. With the advent of the Soong's embracing of the Fantome, a new order formed of the tribe encompassing all members of a given Void, which then divided down into unions by trade. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
