The Light Defense Drone is a smaller, faster, flying drone that provides area security, light support, and reinforcement. They are NOT generally tasked to a specific Mecha, but rather coordinated from a central command LDD-02 Light Defense Drone. center. In order to save costs and expand program potential, the Light Defense Drone was outfitted with a removable rail launcher system capable of firing SRM's for interdiction duty; They can therefore also fire larger ball bearings, which become part of a counter-orbital rings that will usually sufficiently damage anything trying to escape a planet that boarding become inevitable- Or, of course, the crew can choose to crash. Electromagnets allow the drones to keep the ball bearings in their assigned orbital routes (called "shepherding" the ring), which keeps the ring in good condition. UGC engineers and Robotechnologist chose to remove the armature assembly for costs reasons; However, the socket the armature went into is still there, and it could be re-installed quickly if needed. Deployment Groups of up to 10 are sent out from a base station, such as a ship in orbit, and assigned specific tasking, such as to patrol certain orbit (usually a trans-polar one), or to search along a specific course, or to attack any enemy Mecha in XYZ area. Redundancies Like the Primary Defense Drone, the Light Defense Drone's coms cluster is highly vulnerable to attack; However, since the Light Defense Drone was specifically designed to fly, they will simply RTB if comms are lost. There are no other redundancies. Employment The Light Defense Drone is used whenever the REF or an RDF needs firepower in XYZ area quickly; They are often sent in to shore up overwhelmed forces by providing enemy forces simply too many targets to take on. Notes: * Depleting the MDC of the torso will shut down the unit completely. ** Depleting the MDC of either one thruster will not rduce speed, but will reduce range (to 25% of normal range); Destroying both will ground the robot. *** Depleting the MDC of the communications cluster will render the unit unable to communicate with a higher authority; It will remain with its assigned Mecha or continue the last mission given (for example, if instructed to proceed along a given route and destroy specified targets, finally reaching a specific spot, then no further instructions), but as soon as that Mecha is destroyed or that mission is completed it will return to its base. (If assigned to go to a point, with no further instructions, it 'may' remain there for up to 24 hours, but then will RTB.) **** Depleting the MDC of the Sensor Eye will blind the robot, forcing it to use its other sensors to target.
