The Tiresian Empire built several hundred factories in space, amongst them the much hyped Robotech Factories. To protect these investments, they developed several types of Drones in the space factories including this a bi-pedal purified combat drone. These spent most of the time killing

various types of unwelcome wildlife, but occasionally more interesting events transpired, up to and including Invid attacks.
The Tiresians never altered their design for the defense drone, but one of these factories was captured by the Terrans shortly after the "official" close of the First Robotech War, and the Terrans did make several alterations to the design:
1. Dual Main Particle Beams: The original design only had one main particle beam. The Terran simply added a second PBC.
2. Addition of Quaedluun-Rau Style Arms: Firstly this added lasers. Secondly it added hands, capable of using Mecha weapons pods.

The Terrans also added a shield generator, but this doesn't necessarily need to be used. The Tiresians, after obtaining the parts to build some 200+/- units (from pieces captured in battle) decided to copy the Terran example, with the critical (some say foolish) mistake they did not keep the shield generator.
Tiresian Primary Defense Drones, like their REF counterparts, are assigned to a particular Bioroid or other piloted Mecha, follow them like a private following an old sergeant. However, the theory of employment similarities end there; The Tiresians give their drones FAR greater autonomy to select targets and assign them in greater numbers, since the Tiresians will generally be on the loosing side of an illegal enterprise, and therefore must take greater risks to achieve some reward. Besides, they don't care about collateral damage as much, and dead civilians makes for better bargaining chips; Make it clear to the "reefers" that they mean business and will not hesitate to kill civilians, and the REF might just back off a little.
Deployment
The REF and most RDF's typically deploy between 3 and 5 PDD-01's with most Destroids (8-10 for the MAC II, MAC III, HAS I, and HAS II), and 1 or 2 with Veritechs. The drones are semi-autonomous; They can be directed to places, to fire on specific targets, to take specific routes, etc or tasked to stay within a given distance of their Master Mecha. The pilot simply needs to make that decision (called "manual control").
Redundancies
The communications array on the drones is somewhat sensitive, and therefore a secondary retractable comms array is kept inside. If the main array is destroyed, the drone will start trying to find cover or get away from the fighting to someplace safe enough to deploy the secondary array, then deploy this and request orders; These orders are 'usually' to RTB, though they may not be.
Employment
The drones are typically used to augment their Master Mecha's firepower; If the Master Mecha is in danger of being destroyed, they will form a firing line between the Master and the danger, allowing them to escape.
Once this has been accomplished, they will attempt to escape themselves; However, in some battles damaged units have been observed to give other damaged units enough of their own equipment to allow one to escape. This has been determined to be a sub-routine of the Master program, where the drones have a kind of "camaraderie" sub-routine. They will do whatever they can to help their fellow drones. As a result, drones are now eligible for certain specific awards (valor, primarily), and the results have proven the wisdom of this- Once aWarded, the drones fight better and better (or braver, more to the point).

Notes:
* Depleting the MDC of the torso will shut down the unit completely.
** Depleting the MDC of the legs will reduce speed by 90% by running.
*** Depleting the MDC of either one thruster will not reduce speed, but will reduce range (to 25% of normal range); Destroying both will ground the robot.
**** Depleting the MDC of the communications cluster will render the unit unable to communicate with a higher authority; It will remain with its assigned Mecha or continue the last mission given (for example, if instructed to proceed along a given route and destroy specified targets, finally reaching a specific spot, then no further instructions), but as soon as that Mecha is destroyed or that mission is completed it will return to its base. (If assigned to go to a point, with no further instructions, it 'may' remain there for up to 24 hours, but then will RTB.)
***** Depleting the MDC of the Sensor Eye will blind the robot, forcing it to use its other sensors to target. These sensors are fine for navigation and general area information, but for targeting purposes is not terribly accurate: No bonuses to strike.

Features:
  • ESM: Radar Detector. Passively detects other radars being operated.
  • Radar: Combat grade radar. Range 100 miles, can track up to 50 individual targets. 95% reliability (24% against unfriendly stealthed vehicles).
  • Blue Force Tracker: Identifies friend from foe. Overlays the information on both the radar and HUD, ensuring that friendly forces are not accidentally targeted.
  • GPS: Standard tracking device. Ties into the Blue Force Tracker.
  • Anti-Jamming System: Reduces Electronics Countermeasure by 25% (decrease skill level appropriately).
  • MRA 6 Radios: Allows real time, continuous radio link up with friendly forces in the area via satellite relay over laser radio signals, preventing jamming, and automatically encrypts/decrypts same to prevent eavesdropping.
  • Type-11 Wide Band Radio: Auxillery radio; Effective 10 mile range, auto encrypt/decrypt. Works on standard radio band wavelengths, so it can still be jammed (if the enemy knows the frequencies).
  • FLIR/SLIR: ForWard and Side Looking Infrared. Allows the robot to see targets at night.
  • Virtual Map: Displays a continuously-updating map of local terrain for the bridge. Takes data from and gives data to other friendly units in the area. Effective navigation of 85% as updates come. Good to 500 miles. Specific range can be adjusted in 10,000 mile increments.
