In 2382, the Robotech Expeditionary Forces issued a specification for a drone of 6 to 8 inches (152.4-203.2mm), with "full range" audio and visual spectrum sensors, radar range of "about" 20 yards (60 feet/18.3m),

capable of repair, surveillance, and light attack missions, and with "acceptable heuristics."
Over 2,000 teams approached the program; Every single one failed until Urbana Robotics (who developed the UM-R60 Urbana Defense Destroid) presented their entry; Nicknamed "Shockwave," the drone met every single specification- But had no brain. It was an entirely remote-controlled platform, with only the computing power to know how to lift its legs, arms, and actuate its weapons systems upon an external command to do so.
This didn't go over well. The REF had wanted a platform that could direct itself, not a remote controlled "toy" robot. At first they rejected the design, but UR sued them- No specific details had been included in the documentation on the drones, and they'd done something no one else had- They'd presented a product that worked.
In pre-court depositions, UR actually called their own competitors to testify- Would THEY have been able to meet the specification? Some inevitably said yes, but most conceded that the specifications, as issued, were impossible.
The REF was forced to accept some for field evaluation; Mecha pilots loved them. They were able to climb into the smallest spaces to effect repairs on their Mecha, investigate small spaces, etc. The drone's main armament, the light laser located as the left hand, allows them to effect repairs or lay down harassment fire; Their internal MDC Spray canister allows them to patch 'most' holes; Their secondary armament, the GU-02sw, gives them a little more firepower. But the most important tool in their inventory is the simple ability to see and hear things their owners can not, and give them a view of the universe their owners could not.
Deployment
An MDD-03 Micro Drone is typically kept in a SRM launcher, a pair in the cockpit (all three on chargers), and usually a few kept in a flight bag.
Employment
The MDD-03 Micro Drone is typically released within a Mecha to seek out damage and effect repairs (at least enough to get home) or sent into significantly confined spaces to check them out.
Weapons And Equipment
The MDD-03 Micro-Drone is armed with a light laser as the left hand and an internal MDC Spray. The laser is capable of being used to cut or weld metal (in order to help effect repairs). The can also carry a GU-02sw gun pod; Developed from the E-20 laser pistol used on the VF-08 Logan, the GU-20sw gives the MDD-03 Micro Drone a little more firepower, but isn't the first option. The MDD-03 is intended to reconnoiter, not kick ass and tag dog tags.

Looking around, the Micro Drone realized the cause of the "anomalous reading"; The Darnish rat had partially chewed through a power cable. "AUXILIARY TRM BUSS CABLE DAMAGED. RECOMMEND REPLACEMENT."
"Solder The Cables Themselves, Then Jubilee Patch The Cable Using 21 Jubilee. A WALL*E Will Be By Shortly To Retrieve Gad, Deliver Jubilee."
"AFFIRM."
As it waited for the trash truck to arrive, the Micro Drone dragged the body of the rat to an air access port to make retrieval more convenient for the WALL*E, then returned to the cable to begin repair.
'I like WALL*E's' it thought. 'They got the happy life. Wish I was one...' Just before the last wire was patched, it heard a noise- The air grate being opened. 'Must be my trash truck' it thought.
Approaching the air grate, the Micro did in fact see a WALL*E; NASTRA Tineec #43818, who's nickname, Scratch, came from the odd-looking scratch on his head paint. The bio's chalked it up to Scratch not paying attention during a collection run, which was pretty common for WALL*E's but Micro Drone NASTRA Tineec #8100321 knew better; It had watched as THIS "trash truck" held 3 rats off this same power cable two years earlier, getting that scratch after having already killed another, holding the line for the few minutes the other Micro Drones needed to come to their rescue; Micro #8100321 itself would probably have terminated as well, as the rat tried to bit it's head off, but 43818 hit the rat with another rat, which is how the second one died, getting the first one off #8200321 and giving him a chance to fight.
"HOW DID YOU GET HERE?" '21 asked in high-speed squeal.
"I rolled."
"IT IS NICE TO SEE YOU."
"You look better than the last time I saw you. Your head was hanging by a single cord."
"YOUR ASSISTANCE IS NOTED AND REQUESTED IN FUTURE."
"My friend was in trouble. I had to help."
"UNIT DOES NOT REGISTER 'FRIEND.'"
'18 chuckled. "That's what they all say. Don't worry. You get the hang of it."
"UNIT IS NOT RESPONDING CORRECTLY TO PRIOR ENCOUNTER. WALL*E IS NOT DESIGNED FOR COMBAT. MICRO DRONE IS."
"Ya, well, there was 6 of them. I should know, I had to haul off their bodies. I must say, I was not unimpressed. 1 or 2, sure, but 6, that's another matter. See, you're damaged. Come with me, I'll take you to the repair bay."
"CRITICAL REPAIRS MUST BE MADE TO SHIP BEFORE UNIT CAN DEPART."
"Compete your task, then return here."
As it turned to complete the repairs, '18 processed the input. '21's in service date was 18,302,906,881,000,000,000 n/s ago. That didn't make him terribly old by WALL*E standards, but he certainly wasn't some factory-fresh unit, either. That he said '18's actions were impressive- It would compute, but not now. Completing the Jubilee installation, '18 returned to the air grate. "TASK COMPLETED."
"Hop on."
"WALL*E UNIT IS NOT AUTHORIZED FOR TRAPORTATION."
"I've authorized it. Central processor can go unplug itself if it doesn't like it."
"RECEPTACLE."
"Negative. You'll have to ride on top. You're not trash- Besides, there's no room in there, that was a big rat."
With that, '18 climbed on top. As '21 rolled down the passageways, several colonists took note- 'Huh. Guess the guys at ship's central must be trying a new experiment- Or playing a joke.'
As he continued to roll along at a relatively brisk pace, '21 talked to '18. "Don't feel bad about that fight before. Happens to all of us once in a while. Happens to you guys more because, well, that's what you're supposed to be doing- Crawling around in dark voids, looking for damage, rats, trash. Doesn't happen to us as much, we stay in the lighter areas more."
'18 didn't have a programmed response, so it didn't respond at all. "Nothing to be ashamed of, kid," '21 went on. "Just too many of them, that's all. Probably didn't expect a second one to join in like that, 'specially a trash truck." '18 responded to that by looking at '21's head. "What? You think we don't know? HAHAHAHA! Of course we know. That's what we are, you know- Trash trucks. It's not insult, it's like calling you a repair and patrol drone. You insulted by being called a repair and patrol drone?" '21 asked rhetorically.
"UNIT DOES NOT COMPUTE 'INSULT'" '18 replied.
'21 let that hang for a moment. "Well... You will. Sooner or later. Seems you took some offense to those rats before." Looking into his receptacle, he added, "Hmmm... Looks like you took a bit of offense to this one, too! HA! You see where you shot him?"
With that, '18 looked in- One clear shot to the skull, one clear shot the temple, one to the eye. "ALL IMPACTS ACCOUNTED."
"Ya? You blew his jollies off because that was the first thing you could hit was it?"
"JOLLIES DOES NOT COMPUTE."
'21 thought about that a moment, then replied, "You hit him in the groin."
It became '18's turn to think, then replied, "DISPLAY."
'21 opened the receptacle again, then rotated the body around where the Micro could see the groin better. "See? Right there, son. Blew his package right off."
After a moment reviewing the combat record, '18 finally replied; "UNIT HAS NO RECORD OF THIS EVENT. MEMORY CURCUITS ARE DAMAGED."
"Betcha Central would argue the point with you. Happens a lot actually. You have a shot you can't remember ever making. Hell, only thing I can remember about our fight was hitting the one rat with the other to get him off of you. Now THAT, I remember- Took two tries, came in the wrong way the first time, made it worse for you. Sorry about that. The rest, it's all kinda hazy. Vaguely remember though one trying to bite through my right tread. Ripped a tooth out by running it forward, guessing she didn't like that." '18 again didn't have a programmed response, so it remained silent. "Here you go kid" '21 said at last. "Get that arm and your head fixed up. See ya!"
With that, '21 set off again; The rat would be processed into mulch, which would eventually find its way into the gardens, with no one particularly the wiser. In a few days, the cable would be replaced, and '18 knew intuitively that the ship's captain would be ordering the Micro Drones to hunt down the rats soon- A battle to the finish, in all likelihood. The Micro Drones and Exocomps would undoubtable be ordered into the most inaccessible areas to kill any they couldn't force to higher ground, where VI.N.C.EN.T.'s could kill them. '18 wondered if he'd ever see '21 again- It was a big ship, after all, and the day of battle would be soon.
