"We had seen our snowspeeder pilots perform maneuvers every day in
the simulators, before the speeders had been adapted to the cold. But we
had never seen the full squadron in flight, and it was a heartening sight."
-Voren Na'al, regarding the Battle of Hoth.
The Incom T-47 airspeeder was an airspeeder that became famous during the Galactic Civil War for its military use by the Alliance to Restore the Republic (Rebel Alliance).

Characteristics
The T-47 was an atmospheric vehicle designed for industrial cargo handling. Its cockpit featured positions for a forward-facing pilot and a rear-facing cargo manager. The cargo manager used the airspeeder's magnetic harpoon and tow cable to control repulsorlift cargo modules.
Militry Use Conversions
Converting the T-47 to militry use is not very hard; Some records indicate they may in fact have started out as militry support platforms, or derived from another design, referred to as a "fighter tank" or "tank fighter," a kind of very-low flying heavy attack craft used to support infantry on the ground in an era before the Rakatan Galaxy developed large-scale robots.
The main alterations are the installation of additional or improved powerplants, more powerful gravpods, heavy forward weapons (in this case usually using cut down ship's guns), and installing at least basic shielding (though greatly improved shielding has happened on an irregular basis).
History
The T-47 is a barge tug that has been over the Rakatan Galaxy's history modified into an attack craft; The First major recorded event was during the Ancient War, when rebel technicians made these conversions on the ice worth of Hyith, thence becoming commonly known as the snowspeeder; The rebels had used the T-47 airspeeder for reconnaissance on Dantooine and other planets. Not built as direct combat craft, the rebels used scavenged Y-Wing parts, especially armor plates, control surfaces, and refitted cockpit modules.
The Rebels armed the craft with dual laser cannons and converted the cargo manager into a gunner. Computerized targeting systems and displays were used by the gunner to control the lasers and harpoon gun. However, the pilot could take control of weapons if needed. Since these speeders lacked shields (shields would be installed later on), armor plating was added to the hull. Advanced power plants and repulsorlift engines were installed to compensate for the added weight of armor and weapons. Its small size, maneuverability and speed allowed the ship to dodge enemy blasts.
In addition to cold environments, T-47s were modified by Alliance forces for use in several different climates. The swampspeeder version included flotation gear and water-tight seals. The sandspeeder was equipped with advanced filters to keep out sand, engine cooling units, and long-range radar for navigating sandstorms. The skyspeeder had a pressurized cockpit and more powerful repulsorlifts for higher altitudes. (if the pilot and cargo manager/gunner are wearing pressure suits, pressurizing the cockpit is unnecessry.)
The Rebel T-47 was also vital to Alliance tactics such as Attack Pattern Beta and Attack Pattern Delta; So vital in fact that it became a stanadrized doctrine, and is still the primary tactic of T-47's in general.
During the Battle of Hyith in 3 ABY, snowspeeders delayed the advancing Imperial forces, providing extra time to evacuate Rebels from Echo Base. After finding the snowspeeders' blasters to be ineffective against AT-AT's, Rebel pilots used tow cables to tie up the legs of AT-ATs, causing at least one to crash to the ground. Regardless of this partial success, many (if not most) of the snowspeeders that participated in the battle were either damaged or destroyed, and all of the rest were lost when the Syhith took control of the base- A loss the rebels felt deep into their wallets, since this would mean replacing the entire fleet or commit to a ship-borne strategy (which is what they did in the end).
After that War, the T-47's returned to strictly civilian use for about 50 years until forced back into militry service, though at this point the craft had been re-designed with militry service in mind from the outset, and included the more powerful powerplants and repulsorlifts, as well as the forward guns (which were still the same basic design, though purpose-built for this duty rather than converted from another purpose) and shields now commonly seen.

    Discussion
    "Attack Pattern Delta. Go now."
― Luke SKYWALKER, during the Battle of Hoth.
"Attack Pattern Delta" was one of three Rogue Doctrine attack formations developed by Commander Luke Skywalker and Alliance tactician Beryl Chiffonage, with help from Risiev Credal, for use by the T-47 airspeeders stationed at Echo Base on the planet Hoth.
    History
Skywalker and Chiffonage knew they would be facing Imperial walkers in the upcoming battle after the Rebel base had been discovered. However, until the actual thick of combat, the fact that the armor of an AT-AT walker was too strong for the snowspeeders' laser cannons was unknown. The tactic consisted of a formation of snowspeeders approaching the enemy walkers in a single-file formation to give the enemy a single target. When the speeders reached optimal firing range, the lead speeder would fire before peeling off in one direction. While an AT-AT could only track a single speeder, the rest of the squadron would be able to approach relatively safely, each with a clear shot before parting in different directions. This tactic was used to great effect against the AT-ATs during the Battle of Hoth.
    Strategic Implications:
The wide availability of the T-47 and the ease with which they were converted to militry service gives Robotech Expeditionary Forces analysts nightmares; Several hundred factories capable of producing thousands each exist, and the weapons system might well be the most powerful airborne weapons system to date. "Load a thousand of these onto a disposable ship and send it all to Terra or Fantoma, and you'll have a First order crisis on your hands." The REF is understandably very worried; There are far too many of these out there to try to bring them all in (even a small percentage would be "daunting"), and many serve in critical economic support areas. In either case, simply "confiscating" them would only cause another platform to be fielded, and in all likelihood an identical one (it's not like nobody knows how to build these things). Additionally, the various system's Defense Forces field them in great numbers; Tantoo and D'go Ba use these to exclusion, without even fielding other aero-space craft.
The issue, for the moment, seems to be contained to the Rakatan Galaxy for the most part; A half-dozen were seen in use by Atorian Malcontents, but these were operating in the Rakatan Galaxy, and unlikely to have been spread abroad, especially since they are still showing preference for their own fighter developed from the UGC'S Spacer II Fighter, and the UGC's handling of the Rakatans in general has been met with lukeWarm support by the overwhelming majority of the populace (including the Geh 'Dia Order), limiting the number of Rakatan Galaxy malconts to the Syhith Order and their "allies" who disdain the T-47 (even though they developed their own Destroid-like construct).

    Weapons Systems:
    1. Laser Cannons (2): Rather than try to build up a smaller laser cannon, these used a cut-down ship's laser cannon assembly. The range and power to target are diminished significantly, but compared to other craft it's still phenomenal, and this ability to re-purpose old ships guns is the primary thing that has those REF analysts so worried and upset. A second powerplant had to be installed to accommodate these very impressive guns.
    Purpose: Offense
    MD: 4D10 per laser.
Rate of Fire: Up to 4 blasts per melee each.
    Range: 10 miles
    Payload: Unlimited.
    2. Tow Cable: on the aft of the craft is a turret with a tow cable capable to entagling and even tripping many types of robots. Does not work on RDF/REF Destroids except the Raditzs Regult Zulu-1 ("Tid Bitz").
    Purpose: Anti-Robot.
Effect: A successful strike will cause an entanglement; A strike of 15+ will cause the robot to trip, falling flat on its face. The robot pilot can attempt to dodge (successful dodge), free themselves (successful roll with strike), or cut the cable (successful counterstrike, -5 until the cable is detached).Range: The cable istself is 12,000 feet long.
Rate of Fire And Payload: Each Snowspeeder can carry one.

    Features:
    • Radar: Combat grade radar. Range: 200 miles, can track up to 250 individual targets. 95% reliability (24% against unfriendly stealthed vehicles).
    • ESM: Radar Detector. Passively detects other radars being operated.
    • Full Range Sensory Suite: Infrared, ultra violet, Magnification, night sight, color filters, thermal imager. Range is about 2,000 miles for MOST sensors.
    • Sensory Systems: The craft is equipped with sensors very similar to those carried by the SR-71 and other spycraft; However, some of the higher end material is NOT carried, as the possibility of being shot down is too great. Note that the sensors on this craft is nowhere near as extensive as its larger brothers. Optic Systems: Infrared: 20 miles, Magnification: 15 times; Ultra Violet: 22 miles, Magnification: 25 times; Night Vision: 24 miles, Magnification: 8 times; Color Filters: 19 miles, Magnification: 200 times; Thermal Imager: 10 miles, Magnification: 40 times.
    • Motion Detector: Activates a loud wailing when an object is coming at the user fast, and a soft ringing if it's coming slowly. Activation ranges must be specified by the pilot.
    • FLIR/SLIR: Forward and Side Looking Infrared. Allows pilot and weapons officer to get visuals on targets at night.
    • Video Recorder: Records from sensors and the cockpit itself. 500 hours of recording available.
    • HUD: Displays maps, radar, targeting information, and any OTHER information the wearer wants directly in front of the user.
    • Anti-Jamming System: Reduces Electronics Countermeasure by 3/4 (decrease skill level appropriately).
    • Electronic Counter Measures (ECM): These systems disrupt enemy radar and tracking systems, making it difficult for them to lock onto the ship with weapons. The countermeasures give the Mecha a +3 to dodge, +2 to strike and +1 on initiative in combat.
    • AMC/FD (2): Anti-Missile Chaff/Flare Dispensers. Actually launches a glob of burning magnesium/aluminum alloy to confuse both radar AND heat sensory systems. Fires off 04 chaff/flares each time it is activated. The system is KNOWN to work on all KNOWN radar and infrared systems, but concerns continue that somewhere out there their MIGHT be a system that will be totally unaffected by the system. Reduce effects by 20% against smart missiles (add +20% to rolls for smart missiles).
      Effect:
01-50: Enemy missile or missile volley detonates in chaff cloud- Missiles are all destroyed
51-75: Enemy missile or missile volley loses track of real target and veers away in wrong direction (may lock onto another target).
76-00: No effect, missile is still on target.
Also note that the chaff cloud will also blind nearby heat sensors (and optically based sensors at night) for 1 melee. They will suffer the following penalties: Reduce melee attacks/actions, and combat bonuses by half.
      Duration: 1D4 melee rounds.
Payload: 60 chaff/flares. Each time the system is engaged, the system fires off 04 chaff/flares.
    • GPS: Standard tracking device.

    • MRA 6 Radios: Allows real time, continuous radio link up with friendly forces in the area via satellite relay over laser radio signals, preventing jamming, and automatically encrypts/decrypts same to prevent eavesdropping.
    • Type-11 wide band radios: Effective 10 mile range, auto encrypt/decrypt. Works on standard radio band wavelengths, so it can still be jammed (if the enemy knows the frequencies).
    • Blue Force Tracker: Identifies Friend from Foe. Overlays the information on both the radar and HUD, ensuring that friendly forces are not accidentally targeted.
    • LDP (4): Launched Decoy Pods. Located on the top of the port and starboard wingtips. The fighter can carry a special pod that carries four advanced decoy drones. These drones are launched to go where ever they want for 30 minutes. Each is a specially designed radar lure that creates a radar image to mimic the fighter. If decoys are not destroyed, they can be recovered and repaired. This system has been successfully deployed against SEVERAL alien radar-type sensors (including one that works off of sound).
      MDC: 5
Effects: The decoy has a 98% chance of fooling ordinary non military radars and non smart guided missiles, and a 90% chance of fooling military grade radars and advanced smart missiles.
Range: Towed to 328 feet (100 meters) from the fighter or released to go wherever it wants. Can fly independently for about 30 minutes.
Rate of fire: One can be tether deployed at a time and requires 15 seconds to deploy another decoy. Any non-loosed decoys can be reeled in again.
      Payload: 16 Decoys total.
    • Smoke Dispensers (8): Throws out smoke flares capable of covering a 2503 foot area. Special chemicals in the smoke obscures IR and heat sensors, and defeats visual tracking of the vehicle. Note that it DOESN'T make the vehicle invisible, but simply negates ALL bonuses to strike.
    • Combat/Targeting Computer: Records all enemy and friendly activity over the course of time; Can replay that activity for the pilot, assign target designation numbers, and track likely damage based on mathematical formulas (i.e. "Right leg red" badly damaged/destroyed, "head green" not damaged, etc). Displays this information as a pop up in the HUD on request by the pilot.
    • Heat And Radiation Shielding: Special shielding prevents the penetration of life threatening heat and radiation.
    • Variable Tint Cockpit Canopy: Adjusts tinting to light conditions, up to an including a black dot if the sun is directly on the pilots face (only covers eyes).
    • Survival Pack: A pack of simpler emergency survival supplies: Pup tent, sleeping bag, black light, GPS, First aid kit (bandages, gauze, bandage tape, pads, antiseptic/analgesic), plasma torch (for small repairs and starting fires), repair kit (with MDC Repair Spray), sewing kit (a small spool of thread and 5 needles), 7 star flares (250 foot apogee), 7 white parachute flares (1,500 foot apogee), 100 foot of black or brown parachute cord (150 lbs tensile strength), 2-5 days rations, 2 gallons water, water purification kit (good for about 10 gallons), manual-inflating liferaft (for at-sea abandonment), self-inflating lifevest (15# buoyancy). The liferaft can also double as a Pup Tent if so desired (though most pilots prefer to use a parachute for that, if anything, due to the fact that it is easier to hide).
    • Virtual Map: Displays a continuously-updating map of local terrain for the pilot. Effective land navigation of 85% as updates come. Good to 50 miles. Specific range can be adjusted in 1 mile increments.
Combat Bonuses from T-47 Combat Elite:
    • 3 Additional attacks per melee.
    • +4 Roll.
    • +2 Strike.
    • +2 Parry and dodge.
    • One additional attack per melee at levels 6 and 11.
